At Firebird HQ we love getting creative and when a private client asked us to propose our ideas for a surprise Wimbledon themed 50th birthday party, we got just a touch excited!
Initial thoughts were tennis balls galore, rackets, trophies, strawberries and of course, the colour scheme just had to be lime green, deep purple and white - this was just the beginning!
The event was held at the very stunning Southampton Harbour Hotel, to which we are a recommended supplier, so we immediately had a vision of what would work in their largest function room, The Bow. The room has floor to ceiling windows providing panoramic views of Southampton’s Marina and Harbour, so was the perfect setting for this summer evening event.
The first task was to decide which elements would create the perfect party atmosphere, reflecting a day on centre court, sipping on Pimms and feasting on strawberries and cream! The client was keen to use lots of colour in keeping with the theme, so we decided upon uplighters in green and purple, cream table linen and lycra chair covers in alternate lime green and purple. To compliment this and create a focal point to the tables, we created bespoke tennis ball floral table centres with tennis balls placed in the stem of the vases. Adorned with matching ribbons to the chair covers, they certainly got everyone’s attention.
Alongside the chair covers and table centres, we provided six clusters of giant bubble balloons and a vivid balloon wall with tennis balls weaved in between. Next to this we laid extra tennis balls, a few rackets and visors to create a fun photo backdrop for guests to pose next to cut outs of Andy Murray and Roger Federer (the birthday boy’s favourite player!).
To add an element of surprise, between the main and dessert course, guests were treated to a performance by our fabulous ‘non-operatic’ singing waiters who suddenly broke into song, playing guitars and handing out roses! After dinner, our DJ took to the stand and played music until the end of the night, with guests dancing the night away into the small hours.
The overall look was fun and colourful, yet still had a sophisticated feel. For those all-important final touches, Wimbledon branded menus were created, the waiters all wore Wimbledon T-Shirts and caps, and of course strawberries were incorporated into the dessert! We also supplied trophies on each table, with a white tennis visor for each guest laid on top of their napkin – all of this combined, really added that extra special something!
Here’s to yet more fun-filled summer events – this one was certainly Game, Set and Match!
