create a product out of recycled 'scrap'

In an eco-special edition of our popular Apprentice event, teams must invent and create a product out of recycled ‘scrap’.

From a variety of (clean!) junk items such as cardboard tubes, CDs, fabric offcuts, old magazines and newspapers and much, much more, teams create a new invention, product or sustainable clothing brand.

Not only must they use the recycled materials provided to make a prototype of their invention, but their product itself must also benefit the environment in some way.

Then, in the style of The Apprentice and Dragon’s Den, teams must demonstrate their business acumen in a bid to impress the boss and get hired!

To make their product a success, teams must turn their product into a brand, giving it a catchy name and logo. They must identify their target market to ensure that their choice of logo and colours will appeal to the right audience as well as having “shelf appeal” against its competitors! Teams then write a marketing plan to demonstrate how they intend to market their product (market?), where it will be sold and how they will attract customers.

As a bonus task, teams can also produce promotional products by painting their own zero waste reusable water bottles and bags for life. Teams then pitch their product, brand and marketing strategy in a presentation to the judges, before performing a 30 second advert in a fun finale!

Eco Team Apprentice FAQs

What is the Eco Team Apprentice activity?

The Eco Team Apprentice activity is an imaginative, environmentally focused team building challenge that combines creativity, sustainability, and business skills. Inspired by the competitive spirit of The Apprentice and Dragon’s Den, your team will transform clean recycled ‘scrap’ into an exciting new product, invention, or sustainable clothing brand.

As one of our most engaging team building events, Eco Team Apprentice encourages colleagues to think differently, collaborate, and have plenty of fun while considering how everyday materials can be given a new purpose.

How does Eco Team Apprentice work?

Your group will be divided into teams and provided with a selection of clean recycled materials. These can include cardboard tubes, CDs, fabric offcuts, old magazines, newspapers, and plenty of other useful items.

Your team will use these materials to design and build a prototype. However, there is an important twist: the finished product must also benefit the environment in some way. This makes Eco Team Apprentice one of our corporate team building activities that combines entertainment with a meaningful sustainability theme.

What will our team need to create?

Your team can develop an invention, consumer product, or sustainable clothing brand. The challenge is deliberately open-ended, giving everyone the freedom to experiment with different ideas and discover creative ways of turning unwanted materials into something with potential.

Teams will need to consider both the practical and commercial sides of their idea, so creating an attractive prototype is only the beginning.

Will we need to create a brand for our product?

Your team will transform their invention into a complete brand by developing a catchy name and memorable logo.

You will also identify your target market and think carefully about colours, presentation, and ‘shelf appeal’. These tasks make Eco Team Apprentice particularly effective for businesses looking for team building events that bring creative and commercial thinking together.

Do teams need to produce a marketing plan?

Once your product and brand have taken shape, your team will develop a marketing plan explaining how you intend to promote the product, where it could be sold, and how you would attract customers.

It adds another enjoyable dimension to the challenge and gives participants with different strengths the opportunity to contribute.

Do we have to present our finished idea?

Your team will pitch its product, branding, and marketing strategy to the judges in a lively presentation.

This part of the experience puts your communication and presentation skills to the test while giving everyone the chance to see what the other teams have created. It is one of the reasons Eco Team Apprentice works so well as one of our interactive corporate team building activities.

Is there an advertising challenge?

Teams will finish by performing a 30-second advert promoting their new creation. It is a fast, fun finale that encourages participants to be confident, imaginative, and entertaining.

The advert can produce some of the most memorable moments of the event and gives your group one final opportunity to impress the judges.

Are there any bonus challenges?

Teams can also take on a bonus promotional challenge by painting their own zero-waste reusable water bottles and bags for life.

This provides another opportunity to explore sustainability while creating promotional products that complement your team’s new brand.

How long does Eco Team Apprentice last?

Eco Team Apprentice typically lasts between two and three hours. This provides enough time for your team to develop an idea, construct a prototype, create its branding and marketing strategy, and prepare for the final pitch and advert.

Its convenient duration also makes it easy to incorporate into meetings, conferences, away days, and larger team building events.

How many participants do you recommend?

Eco Team Apprentice is suitable for groups of 10 to 300 guests. This flexibility makes it an excellent option for smaller departments as well as large company-wide events.

Participants work together in individual teams, allowing everyone to get involved even when you are hosting a much larger group.

What skills does the Eco Team Apprentice activity encourage?

The activity encourages teamwork, communication, creativity, problem-solving, time management, presentation skills, and commercial thinking. Participants must make decisions together while balancing the creative, environmental, and business requirements of the challenge.

As a result, it is one of our corporate team building activities that gives different personalities and skill sets plenty of opportunities to shine.

Is Eco Team Apprentice suitable for colleagues who do not usually work together?

The format is designed to get people communicating quickly and sharing ideas in a relaxed environment. With branding, design, construction, marketing, and presenting all required, there are numerous ways for participants to become involved.

Why choose an eco-themed team building activity?

Sustainability is increasingly important to organisations and employees alike. Eco Team Apprentice introduces environmental thinking in an accessible and entertaining way, rather than turning the experience into a lecture.

Your team gets to see how discarded materials can inspire new ideas while enjoying the energy and friendly competition expected from great team building events.

Why should we choose Eco Team Apprentice for our next corporate event?

Eco Team Apprentice offers much more than a conventional group challenge. It combines sustainability, creativity, business thinking, and entertainment in one energetic experience, ensuring your colleagues have a shared challenge they can talk about afterwards.

If you are searching for memorable corporate team building activities that encourage collaboration while delivering something refreshingly different, Eco Team Apprentice is an excellent choice. From creating an eco-friendly invention to pitching it to the judges, every stage is designed to keep your team involved, thinking, and having fun.
