Murder investigation team building activity FAQs

What is the Murder Investigation Team Building Activity?

Our Murder Investigation Team Building Activity is an immersive forensic challenge in which your team takes on the role of detectives and Crime Scene Investigators. CEO Jonathan Buckley has been found murdered in his office, and it is up to your team to examine the evidence, investigate the suspects, and identify the perpetrator.

The activity is a fantastic alternative to a traditional murder mystery night for corporate events, with hands-on forensic challenges that keep everyone involved.

How does the murder investigation work?

Your group will receive a full briefing from our enthusiastic trainer before being divided into teams. You will work through police statements, case files, forensic evidence, and other clues to establish what happened.

As the investigation progresses, your team will collate the evidence, develop theories, and ultimately decide who committed the murder.

What forensic techniques will we use?

You will get hands-on with a fascinating selection of investigative techniques, including DNA evidence, forensic dentistry, hair, and fibre analysis, fingerprinting, blood spatter patterns, and ballistic examination.

The activity also includes a fingerprint masterclass where you can take your own fingerprints and learn how to dust for prints. Your team can even construct photo fits using FBI software.

Is real forensic equipment used?

The experience has been designed to introduce you to genuine investigative methods, with real equipment used across a series of forensic challenges.

Created by senior ex-detectives and forensic scientists, the event offers an exciting insight into the techniques employed by real crime scene investigators, whilst remaining accessible and entertaining for corporate groups.

How is this different from a traditional murder mystery?

A conventional murder mystery night for corporate events often centres on characters, performances, and working out the culprit from a developing storyline. ‘The Killing’ puts much more emphasis on forensic investigation.

Instead of simply watching events unfold, your team gets actively involved with evidence, fingerprints, ballistics, DNA, and other investigative techniques. This makes it a particularly hands-on form of murder mystery team building.

Is the activity good for team building?

Solving a murder requires communication, observation, logical thinking, and collaboration. Your team will need to share information, consider different theories, and agree on a final conclusion.

That combination makes a murder mystery team building activity an excellent way to encourage colleagues to work together while enjoying something completely different from everyday office life.

How long does the Murder Investigation activity last?

The activity lasts approximately two to three hours, although we recommend allowing the full three hours for the best experience. This provides plenty of time for your team to become immersed in the investigation and tackle the different forensic challenges.

How many people can take part?

Our Murder Investigation Team Building activity is suitable for groups of approximately 10 to 500 guests, making it an excellent option for everything from smaller departmental events to major company gatherings.

Teams are typically made up of around eight people, helping to ensure everyone can contribute to the investigation.

Where can the activity take place?

This is an indoor team building experience that can be delivered at suitable venues both in the UK and internationally. That flexibility makes it ideal for company away days, conferences, corporate celebrations, and other organised events.

Our team can help you understand the venue and room requirements when planning your event.

How much space is needed for the crime scene?

A space of approximately 3m x 3m is required for the crime scene, ideally in the corner of the room. For events with more than 70 guests, space for two crime scenes is required, whilst events with more than 120 guests require three.

Allowing sufficient space helps your murder mystery team building experience run smoothly.

What furniture is required?

You will need one 6ft round table per team, together with chairs for guests. We also require three 6ft x 2ft trestle tables for our equipment.

Black tablecloths are preferred where possible, although white tablecloths are also perfectly suitable.

What audiovisual equipment is needed?

The event requires a screen and projector or plasma screen, speakers, and an HDMI cable for our laptop. For groups exceeding 50 guests, we also require a handheld radio microphone.

We can also provide additional AV equipment where required, with costs available on request.

How long does the activity take to set up?

Our team at Firebird Events will require approximately one hour for setup. This allows us to prepare the equipment and crime scene before your guests begin their investigation.

A flipchart and pens are also required as part of the event setup.

Do participants need any forensic knowledge?

No previous investigative or scientific experience is necessary. Our trainer will provide the briefing and guidance needed to get your team started.

The challenge is designed to be engaging and accessible, so everyone can enjoy piecing together evidence regardless of their role, seniority, or previous experience.

Is there a competitive element?

Teams will work towards their own conclusions based on the evidence they uncover. Once the investigation is complete, the results are revealed and medals are awarded to the winning teams.

It adds a fun competitive edge to the murder mystery team building event and gives your detectives an extra incentive to scrutinise every clue.

Why choose Firebird Events for murder mystery team building?

The Murder Investigation experience we host at Firebird Events has been created by senior ex-detectives and forensic scientists to provide an immersive challenge packed with authentic investigative techniques.

Rather than another predictable corporate activity, your colleagues can examine evidence, test theories, and work together to crack a compelling case. For organisations seeking a murder mystery night for corporate events with a forensic twist, it delivers teamwork, competition, and plenty of memorable moments.
